Call the Fire Department!

July 21st, 2005 | Comments Off | Tagged as: ,

I think that there should be a law passed that prevents me from entering the kitchen with the intent to cook. Today, I was browning some ground beef when I noticed white smoke coming up from around my frying pan. I figured that it must be a film of soap burning off of the pan. Then, I noticed that it didn’t smell too good. I looked under the pan and noticed that something was under the burner and was smoking. I figured that someone had just spilled something down on the burner and that it was just burning off. Then I noticed that the smoke turned dark brown. I lifted up my pan and realized that a small fire had started underneath my skillet. I was able to blow it out, but the smoke made its way around the apartment and set off a smoke alarm. I grabbed the closest thing that I could fan with, a half empty roll of paper towels, and did my best to make the alarm stop. I ended up succeeding without having any of the fire sprinklers go off. After that, I continued cooking my dinner, albeit, on a different burner.

Disinformation

Today was summer convocation, which happens to be Dr. Liberty’s first public event since becoming president of Kettering University. Because of this, today’s class schedule was altered to make a longer lunch break so there would be time for the ceremonies and the picnic lunch afterwards. When I first looked at the schedule, I noticed that while all of the morning’s classes were 50 minutes long, the afternoon was very weird. The first two classes were 50 minutes long, also. Then, we had a 20 minute break in between classes, meaning that a normal 3:35 class would start at 3:55. Then, it said that the last class of the day was 70 minutes long. Ends up that an incorrect schedule had been distributed to the whole school. The corrected schedule had only been distributed to the department secretaries, and no one else was told about the correction. Because of this, my Digital Systems I class ended up meeting for only half an hour since the prof wanted the whole class there for the lecture since it happened to be the only section of the class. For Diff EQ, my prof started on time with only five students out of around 30 in attendance.

Since I have been at Kettering, I am always hearing stories about Prof. Okraku, who teaches introductory econ courses. I always hear that he is a hoot and is a very easy prof. I decided to take his class this quarter. On the advice of my friends who had had him before, I did not purchase the text book since they told me that all I needed to know for the course he would write on the board. Strangely, this quarter, he has been asking almost daily if we have been reading our books. My friends told me that he had never done this to them. Then, today, Okraku handed out a take-home test over material that is supposedly only in the text book. My friends say that this is entirely unlike him. I decided that I would make a beeline for the bookstore at the end of class to buy a text book so that I would beat the rush that I was sure was soon to follow. Ends up that the bookstore is completely out of books for Econ-201. Talked to one of my friends, but he left his at home, which is about four hours away, so even if I did buy it off of him, I would have to wait for him to go back home so that he could get it. I guess that I’ll be doing this assignment from my notes and the internet.

The Downward Spiral

Boy, things just have not been going my way recently. First, CJ calls off his trip up to Chicago to visit me in June. Then, our group trip to visit Mme next weekend got dumped. Then, I found out that we would again be using MasteringPhysics in physics class to handle homework. Then, I decide that I like a girl here, only to find out that she is currently taken. Then, tonight, I go to play my first game of soccer for the season, only to have to forfeit it because we only had three people show up. Guess we did better than our softball team, who only had a spectator show. This means that if any of us want to play any intramural sport this season for CIA, we will have to fork over the $20 readmission fee to get the team back into the league. The only reason that this evening was half-way bearable was that I still got to play soccer. The team that we were going to play decided that they were going to scrimmage among themselves. (They brought almost 20 players!) They let Mike and myself join them. Luke decided that since there was no game, there was no reason to stick around. My team lost, but at least I got to have a good time.

Bummer

How quickly things change. Just talked with CJ, and it ends up that our trip to Mme’s has been postponed. Something has come up on Mme’s end, so the trip won’t be going down this summer. CJ says that he’ll still come and visit me in ChiTown in the winter. I feel sorry for Chief since he already had requested the day off. Hopefully his boss will understand and let him work after all.

Bowling Night

Whoa, had a great time tonight. Went bowling with CIA. This event is normally planned to try to get freshmen into the organization. However, tonight, not a single freshman showed up! Didn’t bother me too much. I was riding to the alley with Geoff, who was following Jason. Unfortunately, Jason didn’t seem to have a clue where he was going, and he was the one who planned this event. We ended up driving in a huge circle and probably added fifteen minutes to the drive time. The rest of the group was a little peeved when we got there since they had to wait so long on us.

I had asked everyone in my lane and the neighboring one not to laugh too hard at me since I was not that good. Know what happened on my first roll? I rolled a beautiful strike, big curve on the ball and all. Needless to say, I got a few nasty looks. Next two frames, spares. Then I started playing like myself again and started throwing gutter balls. At one point, six in a row. I finished the game with a 75. Next game, my woes continued. I bowled a horrible, ugly 34. Out of the twenty times that I rolled the ball, I made contact with the pins only four times! For the last game, I decided to change my technique a little. I rolled a personal best of 115! I was feeling pretty good about myself until I looked over at the screen in Jimmy D’s lane to see that he had bowled a 175! Ben even got a turkey and Jason came within a pin of getting one himself. I guess that I’ll just sit back and enjoy the fact that I have bowled the best game of my life.

Back to School

OK, so I’ve been a little lazy when it comes to updating my blog lately. What can I say? I’ve been a busy guy. I’m back at school again, so sorry if I didn’t get to see you while I was home. I moved in to my apartment on Saturday. So far, I have met one of my four other roommates, which seems a little odd since I have been here two days and classes start today. Maybe sometime soon I’ll put up a gallery of pictures of the apartment. I’ll have to take them first, though.
