Boy, Am I Lazy!

December 17th, 2005 | Comments Off | Tagged as: ,

I had no idea that I had let almost a month pass since I last posted. Blame it on laziness if you like, but I prefer to simply say that I have been busy. I think that a brief recap of what has been going on in my life over the past month is in order.

For Thanksgiving, I went to my Grandma Lieb’s, which is only about two and a half hours away since I am in Chicago. This actually was my first time that I made the trip to a relative’s by my self. Anyway, I had a good time even though it was freezing that weekend. This Thanksgiving was extra special because, for the first time (I believe), we had the entire family there from my dad’s side. When your grandma lives in Illinois, an uncle in Dallas, an aunt in Iowa, and us in Ohio, things like this can be somewhat difficult. However, they aren’t the ones that really made the day special. It was the presence of my uncle’s family that live no more than half of an hour away! Let’s just say that a little bit of tension exists between his wife and the rest of our family. Thanksgiving day was the best having everyone there. We went on a hike in the woods and got to hear lots of great stories form my uncles and my dad. While I was at my grandma’s, we also took a few evenings to look at some old slides. Boy, were some of them funny. We even ran across some from my grandparent’s honeymoon! I hope that I can have stories like that to tell my kids and grand kids in the future.

The next weekend, my fried CJ from high school came to visit me here in Chicago. That weekend still has me confused. I am normally a great driver when it comes to getting places. That weekend I must have at least quadrupled my time being lost behind the wheel. I think that it was the pressure of having someone else there that was depending on you to get them there. For example, I had to drive all the way around Midway just to find the parking garage simply because I freaked out when I thought that I had missed my exit and took another way. When I left the airport, I turned the wrong direction, so instead of heading back toward the interstate, I ended up in a truck yard.

Anyway, CJ’s flight from Port Columbus got delayed because the flight before him had a mechanical difficulty and ended up taking his plane to St. Louis. Even then, I barely got to Midway in time to get CJ (see above for a reason why). We stayed up until 1 o’clock in the morning making our itinerary for Saturday. We ended up settling on five places: the Ba’hai Temple, the Hancock Observatory, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Navy Pier, and the Shedd Aquarium.

The Ba’hai Temple was amazing. It is one of eight or so temples of this religion in the world. According to CJ (the religion major of the group), the Ba’hai are a pluralist religion. They have no formal worship services and he believes that they have to make a yearly pilgrimage to one of the temples.

Next up was the Hancock Observatory, perched upon the top of the Hancock Center. I believe that it is the second highest point in Chicago next to the Sears Tower. The parking garage was interesting in the fact that it was totally enclosed. It even had garage doors! We took the express elevator to the observatory, which is actually the fastest elevator in the world, moving at around 20mph. The view from the top was amazing. They even had an open air walkway (which was quite cold, being December). When we got back to the ground, we got some pictures of the Hancock Center, to give a sense of size. We then took a quick walk over the the Museum of Contemporary Art. CJ was right when he said that I would look at a lot of things in there and wonder why they were even in a museum. I think that I could have produced better art than some of what I saw back in elementary school. All I would have needed was a snazzy title like "A Study of Motion Using Lines and Curves" and I could have gotten a stick figure in there. They did have some interesting pieces, but when one of your permanent displays is a room with pink and yellow florescent lights, you have to start considering the credibility of the institution, or even the art form itself.

Next up was Navy Pier. We really didn’t see much there, but that could very easily be because it was the winter, so all of the fun pier stuff was closed. After that, we continued down the lake shore to the museum campus to see the Shedd Aquarium. They had some interesting stuff there, but the most entertaining part was probably watching the beluga whales be fed. Ok, it was actually watching the tricks that they would do to get fed. I got some movie clips of the tricks on my camera.

We decided to go to the original Pizzeria Uno for supper. They had a very unique way of taking reservations: when you put your name on the list, you also place your order. Added pressure, sure, but a smart idea, nonetheless. While we were waiting to be seated (we were outside since the inside waiting area was full), a guy busted out his sax on a nearby street corner and started playing Christmas tunes. My pictures of him were horrible. Anyway, the pizza was great. What more can you expect of a pizza that has to be over an inch thick, most of it topping? When we finished up, we decided to go walk the Magnificent Mile, otherwise known as Michigan Ave. On our way back to the parking garage to drop off our leftovers, we got hit up for the leftovers by some guy on the street. After we dropped the leftovers in my car, we were approached my a guy who offered to shine our shoes. One problem: I had on tennis shoes and CJ had leather shoes. Not exactly what you normally shine. By the time we made it out to the Magnificent Mile, the snow started coming down. By the time we decided to turn around and go back to the car, the snow was blowing enough that we had to shield our eyes from the snow.

The drive home was uneventful, save for the snow. The next morning, I gave CJ a ride back to Midway so he could fly back home. For once, I didn’t get lost or require directions to get me going in the right direction. Instead, I followed the road signs. It’s amazing how helpful they can be.

Since that weekend, I have been getting introduced to a Chicago winter. I seems like it snows almost every day. Talk about a change from Ohio, where we are lucky to have a white Christmas. I’ll just be happy if the snow can stay away for the next couple of weeks until I am back in Ohio.

This coming week is my last week of work for the quarter. On next Saturday morning, I am going to fly down to my Grandma Pat’s in Mississippi to celebrate Christmas and her 80th birthday. We’ll have my mom’s entire family together for the first time since the Christmas of 1995 when we all got together in Heath for my grandma’s 70th birthday. This is going to turn out to be a landmark year for me. Never before have I taken part in two family get-togethers where the entire family was present. I’ll be on a busy schedule while I am down there, but it will all be worth it. I’ll get back to Chicago on the 29th and drive home on the 30th. If I drive fast enough, I will even be able to make it back to Newark in time to catch a swim meet.

Bummer

How quickly things change. Just talked with CJ, and it ends up that our trip to Mme’s has been postponed. Something has come up on Mme’s end, so the trip won’t be going down this summer. CJ says that he’ll still come and visit me in ChiTown in the winter. I feel sorry for Chief since he already had requested the day off. Hopefully his boss will understand and let him work after all.

Vacation, At Last

Today, my brief summer vacation finally started. You are probably thinking, "Wait. Didn’t he get back from Chicago last week and go to Myrtle Beach?" Well, of course I did. What made today so much better is because my brother left for a youth conference in New Jersey with the church youth group. He won’t get back until next Saturday afternoon! It’ll be nice to be at home without him bothering me (and watching Star Trek constantly. Curse you, Spike TV!) . If any of you out there have younger siblings, you know exactly what I mean.

Sunburns and Bogies

June 21st, 2005 | Comments Off | Tagged as:

Well, yesterday, I got my arms sunburned pretty bad. The rest of my body was spared because it was underwater. Today I woke up and told my mom that I was going to hang out in our room for the day if we had another day at the beach. About five minutes after I told her this, my uncle, Bruce, called and asked if I would like to go golfing with him. I took him up on it, since he is the only person that I ever go golfing with. I coated myself with sunscreen and headed out for the links.

I’m not sure what hurt worse, my sunburn or my game. For my game, I had a pretty decent excuse: I hadn’t been golfing for three plus years, which just happened to be the last time I golfed with my uncle. On my best hole, I could have saved for par, but my lousy putting forced me into a double bogie. I think, that if anything, I was worse in this game than any of the others that I have played. My sunburns could have been a major factor in my poor performance as well.

The Weirdness Continues

You’d think that every vacation would have one weird event, ours being the fire yesterday. Well, we had a second this afternoon. While my dad, Brian, and I were at the beach, a security guard showed up and started talking to a group of kids. Turns out that they had set up a bong on the beach out in plain sight. They seemed to not care about the security guard, so he went and got a real policeman. After he got on the scene, the kids and the two law enforcers talked for a while. They eventually made the kids take the bong apart and had one of the kids take the bong with him as the officials escorted him off of the beach. I’d like to see you try to explain that to your eight year old cousin.

Not The Way To Start Out A Vacation

Surprise! So maybe I lied a little. I am indeed writing this from Myrtle Beach. However, you won’t be reading this until I get back, so there will be plenty for you to read.

We got to our hotel at around 8:30 in the evening, so we decided to go down to the beach since our hotel is right on the beach. We messed around a little in the surf since none of us were in our swimsuits. My brother and I were walking back toward our parents when we noticed that they seemed fixated on our hotel. I looked up and noticed what I thought looked like a fire on one of the balconies. We watched it for a while, not sure what it was. When it grew in size, we realized that it was indeed a fire. We started wondering why there were no fire alarms going off because there were people in rooms very close to the fire. Finally, after people started yelling from the beach that the building was on fire, someone finally set off the alarm to evacuate the building. Something like a half an hour later, firefighters finally made it up to the room. While they were trying to figure out the best way to attack the fire, I noticed a truck driving up the beach. When the truck stopped, I looked up at the balcony, only to see that the fire had been put out. After watching the fire for half an hour, I was a little bummed to have missed the fire being extinguished. We were able to reenter the building about fifteen minutes later. Here is a highly magnified picture:

Goodbye, Chicago

June 16th, 2005 | Comments Off | Tagged as:

Tonight marks my last night in Chicago. I’ll take off tomorrow morning for my drive home. If I am lucky, I’ll make it home in time for supper. Then, I get to do my laundry before going to bed. The next morning, I’ll be back on the road for a family vacation to Myrtle Beach. We’ll be meeting my aunt’s family and possibly my grandma. I might even run across Chief while I’m there, since our visits overlap by a day or two. Anyway, I’ll be back in around a week, so that means about two weeks home before I get to go back to school. Lucky me.

I’m Back

Well, the weekend is over, and I really cannot find a way to classify it. At times, it was great, and at times, it sucked.

Let’s start on Friday morning. I take a shower, I’m feeling good. However, when I go to get a shirt out of my bag, I realized that I had forgotten to bring any shirts home with me. Luckily, I had one shirt that I had left at home that I might consider wearing. I ended up wearing it on Friday. I ended up going out to lunch with my parents at Garfield’s. When we were done, my Dad went home and I went to Elder Beerman with my Mom to go buy a shirt so I would have something to wear on Saturday. When I got home, I helped my Dad with my car, and then started reading "My Ántonia" for humanities.

The night soon came around and I found myself at The Avenue in Tipp City for the Supertones concert. When the first act, The Wedding, came onto stage, I pulled out my digital camera and prepared to take pictures. Only problem was, it didn’t turn on. I quickly dumped the batteries and put in the new pair that I had brought with me. Unfortunately, same result. Throughout the concert, I fiddled with it, but it never worked. Anyway, after The Wedding performed, the special guest, Edison Glass, performed a short two song set. Then, it was time for Roper. I guess that the people in attendance were a little bit more into them than I was. While I wasn’t too keen on their music, they do know how to entertain. Their lead singer, Reese Roper, is a real goofball. Who else, in their right mind, would drink straight Tabasco sauce in the middle of a song, while he has a chest cold. Finally, it was time for the Supertones. Unfortunately, they were without their trumpet player. For a couple of songs, the drummer for The Wedding played trumpet, and did a pretty good job too. For the rest, it was up to us, the audience, and the band to help sing the missing trumpet part. It was a blast. They ended giving two encores. The last song that they played was "Adonai", the first song off of their first CD. Ended up getting home around 1:30 Saturday morning.

Saturday, I got to reading "My Ántonia". Because of this, I never got a chance to hook up with CJ so we could hang out for a while. Sorry ’bout that. My Dad ended up going to Best Buy and getting me an external hard drive I’ll make sure to put it to good use. That is, as soon as I can get my data recovered and reinstall everything. Maybe I will be up and running by the end of the quarter.

Today, not much. I was hoping to be out the door between 1:30 and 2:00, but didn’t end up leaving until around 3:45. Stupid book. The drive back to Kettering was uneventful, though I hope that gas stations will start posting that they do not accept credit cards by the road so I don’t have to wait in line to see it plastered all over the pump. What a waste of time. One positive of all of the delays was that I ended up stopping in Upper Sandusky for dinner. So, you say, why does that matter any way? Because there was a cute chick at the register at Wendy’s. She reminded me of Kim, but was cuter in some way. Maybe it was the freckles, who knows? Those of you who know me well might be slightly disoriented by my mention of a girl’s looks. I would like to take this time to remind you that I do indeed have hormones, just like the rest of you, it’s just that I do a very good job of repressing them. Maybe too good a job. Any comments, ladies?

Anyway, I find myself back in my dorm room after a relaxing weekend at home. Now that I have finished my reading for Social Science tomorrow, I can go to bed with dreams of my Humanities term paper dancing in my head. A girl would be preferable, but who has time for that when finals are just around the corner and you have a term paper due at the end of the week that you haven’t even started yet. Oh well, here’s to a brighter and more care free future.

Withdrawal

I miss my computer. I feel so sad looking at it sit on my desk, unable to do anything. I hope Garrett can get SpinRite, because I don’t want to lose all of my pictures that I have taken, or the papers that I have written, or the programs that I have spent countless hours downloading. It just isn’t right. Computers should never do this to you. A fragile man like me just can’t take the pain caused by the abrupt separation from the world around him. The worst part is that I am not getting any more homework done without the distraction of my computer than when it was working fine.

Even if I have only been IMing for a little more than a month, and at that did it infrequently, I still miss it. Just the thought that people that I know are just a click away is so comforting. By the way, sorry CJ that I never got back with you after you suddenly disconnected, but it was about time for Phys lab anyway. By losing IM, getting plans together for next weekend will be a pain. After all, who reads their email anymore?

I can’t wait for next weekend! I get to go home Thursday after I get out of Social Science (ick). Then, Friday evening, I get to go to the Supertones concert! Don’t know who I will be going with, though. Chief said that a friend of his might be there, but I haven’t talked with him in close to a month. CJ has to work Friday night and Kristen is unavailable (don’t know why). My Mom is insisting that I go with someone and that if I can’t find someone, then she will go with me, since she likes the Supertones too. On Saturday afternoon, I might go hang out with CJ some. Who knows?

Sounds like some of us guys might get together and play euchre and Texas hold ‘em tonight. However, I still have six chapters (about 130 pages) to read on Critical Thinking for Social Science this weekend, plus I have to finish my Discreet Math, which I am completely lost on, and I want to write my extra credit assignment for Humanities so I don’t have to worry about it later. If I actually get that done, I might actually start working on my Humanities term paper, which has a first draft due on March 8th. Maybe I can get Maryanne to help me with it. I found out at the CIA main meeting last night that she loves writing, the exact opposite of me. Maybe with a little help from her I can actually get a decent grade on a writing assignment for once.
